Reflections by Lee LabradaWe’ve all spent a lot of time indoors in the last few weeks. And with this current phase of social isolation, people are more tempted than ever to overeat and engage in eating behaviors that are counterproductive to their health.
I ran across a recent study that addressed the metabolic impact of the snacking of high-calorie foods.
The researcher, Güler, speaking of the modern human diet, said, "The calories of a full meal may now be packed into a small volume, such as a brownie or a super-size soda. It is
very easy for people to over-consume calories and gain excessive weight, often resulting in obesity and a lifetime of related health problems.
"Half of the diseases that affect humans are worsened by obesity. And this results in the need for more medical care and higher health care costs for individuals, and society."
After reading this, I began wondering how many Americans die from the metabolic disease we call diabetes each year? I Googled it, and here’s what I found l: 79,535.
As of the time of the writing, U.S. coronavirus deaths totaled 51, 584.
That’s not to belittle the current focus on corona related deaths, as every life is important.
However, if you start adding heart disease-related deaths to the equation, and throw in other diseases that are largely determined by diet and lifestyle, the numbers become staggering.
People are so
worried about contracting and dying from one disease, that they don’t understand that they’re poisoning themselves on a daily basis by making poor food choices.
It is one of my hopes that people will gain more respect for their bodies and their health during this time of isolation.
It all starts by paying attention to the root of good health: the food you eat. At the root of all major diseases is a causal link to dietary habits.
I hope that you’ll take some time this week to do a nutritional self-inventory and make the commitment to eat only foods that are helpful to your health and well-being.
Make it a great week!
