Hi ,

Growing up in a Cuban household, café con leche (coffee with milk) was a common beverage at our breakfast table. In our culture, even the children drank a little of this with their morning meal. We never thought of our ‘café’ as a stimulant, it was just part of breakfast. Fast forward, and I’m still enjoying my coffee with a splash of milk these days. Like many Americans, I enjoy the satisfaction of waking up with a good cup of Joe. As you know, the active stimulant in coffee is caffeine.

Caffeine has been extensively studied for its performance benefits in athletes. This has given birth to energy drinks, which list caffeine amongst its other ingredients. I don’t know about you, but I’m a bit old school in this regard. Being in the supplement industry, I receive samples of energy drinks all the time. But I’ve never really enjoy them as much as I’ve enjoyed drinking a cup of coffee. When I was competing I discovered that coffee helped me in curbing my appetite between meals when I was dieting. And it also helps me get through my cardio.

Fast forward a few years to when I launched Labrada Nutrition and our famous Lean Body protein shakes. Over time, Café Mocha was added as a Lean Body flavor and soon became a favorite amongst our fans.  We originally introduced Café Mocha without caffeine, but quickly realized that our fans were asking for a caffeinated version. So we recently added caffeine to our Café Mocha Lean Body RTD. It’s getting a great reception!

We still think of the new Café Mocha Lean Body RTD as a protein shake, first and foremost, but with a caffeine kick. I like having one in the morning, as it gives me my protein, plus my cup of coffee all in one drink.  That’s great when I’m running to the office and don’t have time to eat. If I drink this with a piece of fruit, such as a banana, it gives me a quick start to the day.

Unlike common energy drinks and the crash that I experience with those, the protein in the Lean Body keeps my blood sugar up and helps me feel full and energized for hours.  There’s a great article in this newsletter about caffeine and performance, which I would encourage you to check it out.
