Hi ,
"Straight as the crow flies" comes to mind whenever I see a crow on my property near Houston, Texas. Crows tend to keep their distance from people, fly away any time they see you, and normally avoid homes.
But...I’m out in my home gym working out last Tuesday morning and I start hearing a loud
"tap tap tap." At first, I think it’s our neighbor dropping in for a visit. I look up from the bench press, and there’s no neighbor ... however, there is a CROW perched outside, and it’s very determinedly pecking at his mirror reflection in the window of the gym. I laughed and watched him for a while. And then I decided to dub him "Likes" ...and here’s why.
Likes is a lot like many of us, whenever we visit Instagram. We waste a lot of time pecking around our images. We peck the screen of our iPhones trying to muster up "likes." Scroll, peck some more. Post an image. Peck. Check back later. "How many likes did I get?" Peck. Peck.
I’m guilty of it too. Gotta wonder if like "Likes" the Crow, we’re wasting our time. Let’s put it in perspective. Social media can be a great place to stay in touch with friends and to see what people are up to. You can also see images of your favorite fitness stars
and be inspired to workout. But the dark side of this is that you can get discouraged comparing yourself to others and trying to "keep up with the Jones." It’s the false comparisons that cause our insecurity. Not good.
So this week I’m sending out this message: "I’m proud of you for striving to improve your body, your conditioning, and your health. But stop comparing yourself to others. YOU are great, just the way you are, and your focus should be on creating a better YOU. Show yourself some love. Focus on YOUR progress!"
This week I’m going to personally cut down on the "pecking", and increase the "pumping". I’m going to do a little more lifting in the gym, and leave the pecking to my avian friend, Likes.
