So... last Wednesday I came home from work and the weather was so beautiful that I decided to go on a bike ride through my neighborhood. There was a gentle breeze blowing, the temperature was a very comfortable 60°F, and the sun was starting its slow descent...a glorious spring evening!
The bike ride was just what I needed after a day at the office, and what a great way to warm up for my gym workout, I thought to myself. Twenty minutes later, I returned home, after an awesome ride.
I slowed down to get off the bike, pulled up on the handlebars and cleared the first step of my driveway. Then I was lining up to pull up on the second step when my rear wheel caught. I came to a sudden stop and my body lurched forward. Trying hard not to go over the handlebars, I came down with my weight over my hands, throwing all of the dynamic loading on my chest muscles— imagine a midair benchpress!
I felt a sickening rip as my right pec started to give, followed by deep throbbing pain.
"So I’ve managed to avoid a pec tear in the gym for more than 30 years, training carefully, only to do this!?" I thought. I was so mad at myself, I was fit to be tied!
Fortunately, my worst fears have not become reality, in other words, I don’t have a full pec tear, thank God. I do have very nasty bruising from the strained pec, but it looks like it’s going to be alright. I’m planning to be training it again in the gym in a few weeks. Now, I’m going to do some rehab on it with my sports medicine doctor.
Not exactly what I had wanted, but I know it’s only a temporary setback. It’s normal to hit setbacks from time to time that impede our training progress, but you just have to work around it.
When I made a lifelong commitment to staying fit, I realized that there is no giving up. I remind myself that it’s a marathon, not a race. It’s a lifestyle and not a passing thing.
I’m going to get back in the gym and I’m going to figure out what I can do. I’m going to focus on the muscles that I can train. I’m going to train around this injury and do my best until my pec fully heals.
Perhaps you too, have encountered a setback recently? If so, just remember to keep pushing on and do what you can. It’s about the journey and not the destination; that’s what counts.
