It’s springtime in Houston and it’s warming up fast. With the weather getting nicer, everything is starting to blossom, turning beautiful, and people are getting busy working in their yards. I happen to be one of those people who love to have nice flowers around my home. There’s something peaceful and relaxing about taking in the sight of colorful flowers!
So this past weekend Robin and I jumped in the ‘Texas Limousine’, our Ford 250 pickup truck, and went shopping for plants and flowers at the local nursery. After some looking, I spotted this beautiful Bougainvillea, replete with gorgeous orange flowers. I asked the attendant about caring for it and she proceeded to tell me that it flowers best whenever it is stressed. "What do you mean when it’s ...stressed?" I asked.
She replied that they did best whenever they couldn’t get much water. The lack of water made them flower. Wow, I thought to myself. Something beautiful coming out of hardship.
I don’t know about you, but it seems that at those times of my life when I’ve encountered hardships are the times that I have experienced the most personal growth. A plant that is lacking water has to dig deeper into the ground to find it.
Likewise, hardships in our lives make us dig deeper into our souls. It makes us stronger and more resilient, so when the good times do come around we can truly appreciate them and truly reap their benefits. I’ve planted those Bougainvilleas where I can see them each morning to remind me to dig deeper— and to be more appreciative of all the things I take for granted.
I’m going to make myself reach a little more this week, whether I’m working out, just working, or helping others. Make it a great week!
